The Apostolate
of the
New Evangelization

A New Evangelization has begun!

On June 9, 1979, during his first apostolic visit to Poland, Pope John Paul II vehemently lifted the Cross and, deeply moved, proclaimed, "A New Evangelization has begun!"

As the Vicar of Christ, he has vigorously demonstrated through many years of worldwide travels a total commitment to the new evangelization, to a renewed dedication to Our Lord’s Great Commission: "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations." (Mt 28:19)

Despite advancing age and failing health, the Holy Father still travels throughout the world as our model evangelist, calling us all to join him in this New Evangelization. Like him, let us all respond with love, vigor and unceasing dedication to this Great Commission from Our Lord to evangelize!

The purpose of the Apostolate of the New Evangelization (ANE) is to draw the attention of the laity throughout the world to the Holy Father’s repeated invitations to the New Evangelization and to help prepare the laity to vigorously evangelize for Christ in the new Millennium in service to the Church. The purpose of this ANE booklet is to provide guidance for the formation and activities of the ANE Communities of Evangelization, the primary units of this Apostolate. These units are small groups of 5 to 12 people who meet weekly to pray, study, plan and review their apostolic work and have fraternal sharing.

The Goals, Mission, Objectives and
Spirituality of the ANE

On May 1, 1999, the Archbishop of Cochabamba, Bolivia, approved the constitution of the Apostolate of the New Evangelization (ANE) as a Catholic Association of the Faithful. As part of the Catholic Church, the Apostolate of the New Evangelization gathers faithful Catholics who, moved by the Holy Spirit, follow Christ, being animated by the zeal of His Word and by the exhortations of Pope John Paul II. They discover in their daily lives the two supremely important virtues of Love and Mercy and translate them into a new way of thinking and acting as called for by Pope John Paul II in his many calls for a New Evangelization. They offer themselves with their sufferings to God the Father through Jesus, uniting their cross to His cross, their suffering to His suffering each day and work to communicate to others the message of the Gospel through their apostolic actions. In this way they give glory to God the Father, comfort the Heart of Jesus and extend the Reign of the Holy Spirit.

ANE Goal

The goal of the Apostolate is to give today's society, affected by individualism, the diminishment of the person's dignity, the disintegration of the family, and the loss of a national identity, a modern and updated proposal. A proposal that will lead to a profound change and transformation in man's way of thinking and actions that will restore his human and spiritual dignity and permit him to rediscover his forgotten spiritual dimension and to return to the way that leads to the Father's House, following the way that Christ has made known to all men in the Gospel.

ANE Mission

In response to the continuous invitation by Pope John Paul II for the laity to participate more actively in the evangelizing task in support of their pastors, we want to carry a message of Love and Mercy to all corners of our dioceses, in communion with the Bishops and at the service and support of the pastors, by promoting the discovery of the living Jesus Christ and the way of conversion, communion, and solidarity. All this with special emphasis for all those Catholics who, because of different circumstances, have distanced themselves from our Church or have lost the meaning of a true Christian life, yet their hearts are yearning for a way to return to the House of the Father.

This Apostolate, faithful to and in tune with the teachings and doctrine of the Church, fulfills and embraces the many exhortations of Pope John Paul II in reference to the New Evangelization.

ANE Specific Objectives

To form Communities of Evangelization in small groups of 5 to 12 persons that will pray, study and meet weekly in order to put into practice the objectives and spirituality of the ANE and, in turn, to grow and give birth to new prayer-evangelization groups that help the local parish.

To practice the spiritual and corporal works of mercy and in a special way, assist the sick and needy in hospitals, nursing homes and jails.

To offer, in a special way, our apostolic action to the service of the Church in our own local parish.

To strengthen the bonds of charity with the ecclesiastical community by bringing God's presence to others.

To join efforts in creating a more worthy and just society in accordance with the pastoral needs of the Holy Father and the bishops and priests in union with him.

To evangelize by taking advantage of all means of social communication.

To create Centers of Human and Spiritual Formation supported by the Communities of Evangelization for the human and spiritual growth of its members and supporters.

To organize national and international conferences, seminars, retreats. etc. that will enable the Word of God to be communicated in a secular context, joined to science, culture, and social events.

ANE Spirituality

Regular reception of the Sacraments of Confession and the Eucharist.

Live in the state of Grace and make reparation for our sins and those of the world by doing penance through prayer and fasting.

Adoration of the Holy Eucharist, the real and live presence of Jesus among us.

Study the Bible and the documents containing the Catholic Church's teachings.

Spread widely the daily praying of the Rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet.

Spread widely the First Friday and First Saturday devotions to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the refuge of sinners.

Devotion to the Holy Cross and wounds of Christ and His Passion.

Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, whom we want to imitate by our humble submission to the Father's Will.

An active Christian commitment of sharing and testimony by being holy witnesses, especially through changes in our thinking, talking and especially our actions. In other words, our actions will talk the loudest by showing Love and Mercy, especially in difficult times... when we forgive!

Evangelize everywhere by our actions and deeds toward others and a committed Christian life.

Pray for the Catholic Church, the Holy Father and those in union with him.

Forming a Local ANE
Community of Evangelization

How to Start a Prayer-Evangelization Group

Pray to the Holy Spirit for guidance and ask for the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary as Our Lady of Guadalupe (see image to right), the "Patroness of all America and Star of the first and new Evangelization", as invoked by Pope John Paul II and the Bishops of the Americas [John Paul II, 1999, Ecclesia in America].

Share the ANE introductory informational materials with people who may be interested in forming a prayer-evangelization group, an ANE Community of Evangelization. Also encourage them to visit "www.apostolate.org", the ANE Web site, for additional information.

Start with a small group of 3 to 5 people who are of the same mind and heart, who are genuinely interested in responding to Pope John Paul II’s call to a New Evangelization.

Agree upon a regular place and time for your meeting. Try to limit the length of the weekly meeting to 1˝ hours in duration.

Name the group after a patron saint and register your group with the ANE (see last page of this booklet) and gather the necessary items to be used for the weekly meetings.

Agree upon a group moderator (one with enthusiasm) who will invite comments from the group and the active participation of all, respecting each member and avoiding any arguing, judging, discrediting and/or advising of anybody. The group is encouraged to rotate the moderator responsibility among other group members who are willing to moderate the meetings.

Commit the group initially to weekly meetings for a 6 to 8 week period. A primary goal for the group during this initial period is to learn, discuss and decide upon the group’s evangelization goals and objectives and to prepare and implement an evangelization plan.

An important step during this period will be for group members to seek the counsel of their local parish priest for ideas on how they could help evangelize within the local parish.

After the initial series of meetings, the group should evaluate its progress and make another group commitment to meet for three months or more.

Grow solid as a group. At the end of each quarter, further clarify the groups specific objectives while continuing to grow in the ANE spirituality goals. Then, begin to tell other people about the Apostolate of the New Evangelization and your prayer-evangelization group.

Grow slowly with your group, adding people of the same mind and heart. (Read Acts 2:42) As the group increases to 10 to 12 members, two or more groups should be created from the original group since one of the goals of the prayer-evangelization groups is to multiply themselves.

Format of the Weekly ANE
Community of Evangelization Meeting

Try to limit the length of the weekly group meeting of the ANE Community of Evangelization to 1˝ hours. To achieve this objective, the meeting needs to be well planned and a moderator needs to guide the group in adhering to the planned schedule for the meeting. It is important to cover the planned readings but it is also important that all the members present have an opportunity to share their insights and ask questions.

The weekly ANE meeting is organized into four main parts, reflecting the four pillars of the Apostolate: prayer, study, evangelization work and fraternal sharing. The indicated times are for planning purposes and assume a 1˝ hour meeting length:

Meeting Preparations

Prepare a room for the meeting that is comfortable and well lit. Set up a small altar in a central part of the room and upon the altar place a picture of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The image on the back cover of this booklet could be used until a larger, more suitable framed or mounted image for a group meeting is available. On the altar place a blessed holy candle and holy water. Extra rosaries should also be available on the altar as well as matches to light the candle.

Part I - Prayer (25 minutes)

Light the holy candle and everyone should bless themselves with the holy water while making the Sign of the Cross.

The group should begin with either a hymn to the Holy Spirit such as "Come, Holy Ghost" or an invocation to the Holy Spirit such as: "Come Holy Spirit, come by means of the powerful intercession of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, your well-beloved Spouse. Enkindle in us the Fire of Your Divine Love." (Repeat this invocation 3 times.) Then follow with fervent prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary and end with the invocation, "Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of all the Americas and Star of the first and the New Evangelization, pray for us."

A 5-decade Rosary should be prayed for the intentions of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Invite her along with all the angels and saints to come and pray with the group. The Holy Spirit should again be invoked asking Him to lift up our prayers to God our Father through our Lord Jesus Christ for the intentions of the Blessed Virgin Mary. (Guidance is provided in a following section on the Rosary prayers, Mysteries and the virtues each represents.)

Part II - Study (40 minutes)

After the Rosary, the focus of the meeting should be upon readings from the Gospels, Church documents and other books for spiritual enrichment. Try to keep the length of the meeting to 1˝ hours yet provide time for sharing the insights of the group members on each reading, the moderator should guide the group discussions to focus on summarizing the main points of the readings.

Study of the Gospel (approx. 15 minutes)

A key element of each weekly ANE Community of Evangelization’s meeting is the reading and discussion of the Sunday Gospels. The group should first review the Holy Gospel from the previous Sunday and comment upon the main points made by the priest during the homily at that Sunday Mass. The group should then compare these points with the main points identified by the group during the meeting the previous week.

Read the Holy Gospel (average reading time is about 2-3 minutes) for the upcoming Sunday and, then as a group, discuss and summarize the main points of the Gospel. In the United States, the New American Bible (NAB) is the official English translation of the Bible used in the Liturgy.

During this period the group members should be especially thinking about how to apply the Living Word to their lives, particularly the main points of the Gospel.

Study of Church Documents (approx. 15 minutes)

Members of the group should read during the preceding week the pages or sections selected by the group at the previous meeting from:(1) The Catechism of the Catholic Church [as published in Latin by the Vatican in 1994 and subsequently translated into English and other languages] and (2) from one of the Church documents on evangelization that are listed below. These documents are foundational documents concerning evangelization. The Catechism should also be used at any time during the meeting as a reference and foundational source document for the teachings of the Catholic Church. Recent primary Church documents on evangelization are:

Lumen Gentium - The Dogmatic Constitution on the Church

Apostolicam Actuositatem - The Decree on the Apostolate of the Laity

Evangelii Nuntiandi - Pope Paul VI’s Encyclical on Evangelization in the Modern World, promulgated in December 1975

Christifideles Laici - An Apostolic Exhortation on the vocation and the mission of the lay faithful in the Church and in the world, promulgated by Pope John Paul II in December 1988

Redemptoris Missio - The Church’s Missionary Mandate - Pope John Paul II’s Encyclical on Evangelization, promulgated in December 1990

Incarnationis Mysterium - The Mystery of the Incarnation - The Papal Bull of Induction of the Great Jubilee of the Year 2000 (Nov. 1998)

Ecclesia in America - An Apostolic Exhortation to the Church in America on Evangelization by Pope John Paul II in January 1999

Note: The above Vatican documents can be purchased from the ANE (see Appendix A) and are also available at no cost online at: www.apostolate.org except for the Catechism which is at: www.christusrex.org/www1/CDHN/ccc.html

The Catechism is a large Church document and it is a very important resource for use in the formation of ANE members for evangelization. Because of its size, the Catechism is impractical to read aloud from cover to cover during the ANE meetings but there are over 80 "Briefs" throughout the book which provide summaries for generally the preceding 5 to 8 pages. It will take about a minute to read aloud an average size "Brief" and by reading one of these "Briefs" at each weekly meeting the group will be able to completely review the Catechism in 21 months. Group members should read in advance of each meeting the preceding pages covered by the "Brief" so that they are prepared to share any comments or questions they may have concerning the chapter, article or paragraphs covered by the "Brief".

With regard to the Church documents on evangelization, the group should start with, "Lumen Gentium - The Dogmatic Constitution on the Church" , and complete this document before selecting the next Church document. Like the Catechism, most of these Church documents on evangelization are long and impractical to read aloud from start to finish at the weekly ANE meetings. Since these large documents are subdivided into smaller parts of less than a page to several pages in length, the group can select one or more parts for members to read on their own in advance of each meeting. If the group is able to cover a Chapter a week and complete Lumen Gentium in the first two months and, if the group progresses at the same rate, then all seven documents on evangelization could be completed within another 12 months.

In advance of each next meeting, it is recommended that each member highlight key paragraphs or sentences from the assigned reading in the Church document on evangelization which they think concisely state the key points of the reading. At the weekly meeting, everyone can then share by reading aloud the texts that they have highlighted, starting from the beginning of the assigned reading. After the reading is finished, the moderator would guide the group discussion in summarizing the key points of the reading.

After both readings from the Church documents, time should be allocated for the group members to ask and discuss their questions concerning scriptural, doctrinal and moral issues related to the readings. During the preceding week, group members should prepare written questions on anything they do not understand from the readings. If the question can not be answered within the group by referencing the Bible, the Catechism and other official Church documents, the moderator or a volunteer should go to the local parish priest for an answer or to another orthodox, Catholic Church authority. The question can also be referred to the ANE-USA Spiritual Director through the ANE Coordination Office.

As the group members listen to the readings, they should think about how to apply, on a day-by-day basis, their increased knowledge of Jesus and His Church and how they can better support the Church, especially the local Church.

Based upon its progress, at each meeting the group should select new readings from the Church documents for the next meeting. The group should complete each document on evangelization before selecting another one. The next document selected should be based on the goals and objectives of the group.

Study from a Book for Spiritual Enrichment (approx. 10 minutes)

Members of the group should read during the preceding week the selected pages or section from the book chosen by the group for spiritual enrichment from the following list [Note: This list will be expanded over time by the ANE National Spiritual Directors with recommendations from the ANE Communities of Evangelization]:

! The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius

! The Interior Castle - St. Teresa of Avila

! Divine Mercy in My Soul - St. (Sister) Faustina Kowalska

! The Collected Works of St. John of the Cross

! Forty Dreams of St. John Bosco

! The Great Crusade of Love

! The Passion

Each group should decide how it wants to handle the study of the book for spiritual enrichment at the weekly meetings. There may not be time to read the full text from a selected section of the book and still keep the length of the meeting to 1 ˝ hours. An option could be to have group members share the text they thought was particularly significant as they read the book during the preceding week - similar to their highlighting of text in the reading on the Church document on evangelization as described above.

As with the Gospel and the Church documents, the group should discuss and summarize the main points from the spiritual enrichment reading. Again, the group should complete each book before selecting another one. The next book selected should be based on the goals and objectives of the group.

Part III - Apostolic Work (15 minutes)

In addition to formation through prayer and study, the ANE Communities of Evangelization are to perform apostolic work by serving the local Church in carrying out its evangelization activities, particularly the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. This part of the weekly meeting should be used for planning, reporting upon and evaluating group apostolic activities as well as the apostolic work of individual members since the last meeting. It is strongly recommended that members carry out their evangelizing activities in groups of two or more.

There are many ways to evangelize and the Holy Spirit knows how to inspire and guide us in making the best use of our gifts to evangelize for Christ. For example we can evangelize through the practice of the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy, which are described in Section 2447 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church [Vatican, 1994].

People can also evangelize by seeking and taking advantage of opportunities to tell others about the Gospel, particularly to fallen away Catholics and to people who are hurting and have distanced themselves from God, proclaiming to them the Love and Mercy of Jesus. Everybody can evangelize by taking advantage of all opportunities in daily life to tell people about Jesus whether it be in conversations with family, friends and associates or with strangers. A person does not need to be a preacher to evangelize but if the Lord has given someone a gift as a teacher and speaker, then the person should use the gift to evangelize.

In 1990 the U.S. National Conference of Catholic Bishops issued its Pastoral Letter on Evangelization, "Heritage and Hope - Evangelization in the United States". More recently the Conference has published a series of documents that include many ideas and examples for evangelization by the laity at the parish level that should be useful as resource materials for the ANE groups in developing their evangelization action plans. These documents include:

! Go and Make Disciples - National Plan and Strategy for Catholic Evangelization in the United States.

! Thy Kingdom Come - Manual for Evangelization Staff

! A Time to Listen ... A Time to Heal - Resource Directory for Reaching Out to Inactive Catholics

The above documents can be ordered from the ANE (see Appendix A) and should be used as resources as needed.

Part IV - Fraternal Sharing (10 minutes)

This is a period for announcements and information sharing, covering topics of general interest to ANE members.

The ANE will distribute on a regular basis by electronic mail information to all registered Communities of Evangelization. This information will include spiritual reflections from the ANE Spiritual Directors as well as topics of general interest including scheduled retreats and local and international conferences and activities.

The meeting should formally end with the Consecrations to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary (see the following section of this booklet). A hymn to the Blessed Virgin Mary may also be sung in closing.

As an option, after the meeting formally ends, the group is encouraged to have a short period of simple, informal fraternal sharing by those members who can stay a few more minutes.

Additional Suggestions for ANE Members

Does the study program for the group sound like too much? Before answering, first, consider the many years of schooling and additional training we have invested to prepare ourselves for the jobs we perform in this short mortal life and, then, consider the effort we should devote to prepare ourselves and others for the eternal life that never ends.

Persevere! Plan to attend the meetings regularly - this is very important. God will reward each member for his/her effort.

Go prepared to weekly meetings by reviewing in advance the material to be read and discussed at the meeting. Think about the main points of the readings and meditate upon how you will apply this knowledge to your life.

Community within the group is also built by calling upon and especially helping members in need outside of the weekly meetings.

Evangelize by the witness of your actions and actions toward others.

After three to six months of prayer and formation and, with the counsel of the local parish priest on the corporal works of mercy that can be practiced as a group to strengthen the local Church, the group should be ready to focus on helping those most in need in the community.

^ I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell; on the third day He arose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead....

Ě I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Our Lady has repeatedly asked that we pray the Rosary, particularly for world peace.

~ Our Father ~

Amen.

^ May the divine assistance remain always with us.

Ě And may the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

~ Prayer to St. Michael ~

Amen.

~ Prayer for the Holy Father ~

^ Let us pray for our Pope John Paul II.

By governing with fidelity those entrusted to his care may he, as successor to the apostle Peter and the vicar of Christ, build your Church into a sacrament of unity, love and peace for all the world. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Closing Prayers for Meeting

Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Ě Adorable Heart of Jesus, the tenderest, the most amiable, the most generous of all hearts, penetrated with gratitude at the sight of Thy benefits, I come to consecrate myself wholly and unreservedly to Thee! I wish to devote all my energies to propagating Thy worship and winning, if possible, all hearts to Thee.

Receive my heart this day, O Jesus! Or rather take it, change it, purify it, to render it worthy of Thee; Make it humble, gentle, patient, faithful and generous like Thine, by inflaming it with the fire of Thy love. Hide it in Thy Divine Heart with all hearts that love Thee and are consecrated to Thee; never permit me to take my heart from Thee again. Let me rather die than grieve Thy Adorable Heart.

Thou knowest O Heart of Jesus, that the desire of my heart is to love Thee always, to be wholly Thine in life and in death, in time and eternity. Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us. Sacred Heart of Jesus, I trust in Thee. Sacred Heart of Jesus, I love thee. Amen.

Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary

Ě I, (... name ...), a miserable sinner, renew and ratify today in thy hands, O Immaculate Mother, the vows of my baptism; I renounce Satan, his pomps and works; and I give myself entirely to Jesus Christ, the Incarnate Wisdom, to carry my cross after Him all the days of my life, and to be more faithful to Him than I have ever been before.

In the presence of all the Heavenly court I choose thee this day for my Mother and Mistress. I deliver and consecrate to thee, as a slave of thy Divine Son, my body and soul, my goods, both interior and exterior, and even the value of all my good actions, past, present and future; leaving to thee the entire and full right of disposing of me, and all that belongs to me, without exception, according to thy good pleasure, for the greater glory of God, in time and in eternity. Amen.

Recommended Consecration of Home

The ANE recommends that you consecrate your home and family to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary, the refuge of sinners. Hang a picture of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary in your home in a place of honor. Have a priest come and bless your home at least yearly.

Also recommended is constant prayer by offering each day every thought, word and deed, and every joy and suffering for the greater glory of God and for the intentions of the Blessed Mother.

Already belong to a Prayer Group ?

If you are interested in the ANE but already belong to a prayer group that prays the Rosary, you might be asking: What is different about the ANE?

First of all, there is no need to leave or end your prayer group but instead consider incorporating some of the ANE format. What is often different with ANE prayer groups is the formation study and the apostolic work which focuses on evangelization. In other words, the ANE’s mission is to evangelize through service to the local Church by practicing the works of mercy and evangelizing in a new way as called for by the Holy Father, Pope John Paul II.

ANE "Prayer-Evangelization Group" Starter Kit

All the recommended Church documents and the books and booklets for the ANE weekly meetings are generally available through most Catholic book stores. The Church documents are also all available on the Internet and can be downloaded for free. If the books are ordered through the ANE, all profits will be used to help support and spread the ANE evangelization efforts. The ANE operates with an all volunteer organization.

An ANE Community of Evangelization "Starter Kit" is available with: this ANE "Prayer Group" Manual; the first Church document to be read at the meetings, "Lumen Gentium"; the spiritual enrichment book, "The Great Crusade of Love"; 10 each of: (1) the 1st Friday and 1st Saturday Devotions holy cards, (2) Divine Mercy Chaplet flyers and (3) How to Pray the Rosary flyers; and one 8˝ x 11 holy picture, suitable for framing, of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary - like the picture on the back cover of this booklet. (Note: upon receipt of the holy cards and picture, please have the picture blessed by a priest.). Please see Appendix A for ordering information on the Starter Kit.
